Compulsory inspection of your fuel tank
On 1 March 2009, the government obliged the inspection of all existing private fuel oil tanks in the Flemish Region. Whether you are good with one check depends on the size and location of your tank. For example, if you have an above-ground tank of less than 5,000 kilograms or 6,000 liters, then that initial check is sufficient.
If you rely on an underground tank of less than 5,000 kilograms or 6,000 liters for heating, you must have a repeat check every five years. For tanks with a storage capacity of more than 5,000 kilograms or 6,000 liters separate regulations (and more checks) apply, just as for tanks in Wallonia and Brussels.

Of course, as the owner of a fuel tank, you want to be legally in order. But that is not the only reason why you should have your fuel oil tank checked. It is also in your interest to prevent leaks or to quickly detect them. Not only do you lose precious fuel when your tank is leaking; you are also obliged to have a soil remediation carried out if fuel oil from your tank ends up in the soil. Finally, many insurance companies attach importance to regular tank inspections. For example, they only cover fuel oil damage and decontamination costs, provided that you have had your tank checked according to the statutory regulations. Curious if that applies to your insurance? Checking the fuel tank: no reason to panic
After the check your tank will be given a cap or label with a certain color code. Green means that your tank is completely in order. A tank that is given an orange label is not entirely in order. Although it does not immediately pose a danger to the environment. In that case you will get six months to make the necessary adjustments, and then the technician will come along again for a check. Red is less pleasant news: your tank needs to be repaired or cleaned and must remain out of use until it is okay.
Sounds heavy, such a tank check? Totally untrue! If you maintain your tank well and regularly check it, an inspection is nothing to worry about. The chance of leaks is then extremely small (3.5% on average) and even smaller on effective environmental damage.
